Do you hear what I hear?

In the stars
Kathmandu

I've been trying to pick up bits about Vedic Astrology (better known as Jyotish) for the past several years. Evidently the most significant thing is one's Nakshatra, or lunar "mansion." Since there are 27 - odd days to a lunar cycle there are 27 Nakshatras. (I think.)

My Nakshatra is Shravana (in Sanskrit, Tiruvonam in Malayalam). Shravana means "Listening" or Hearing.

For those who know me, it really is frighteningly accurate, though I'm not so sure about the stable-minded part. Here's one summary:

Those born in the Shravana star are experts in music, dance and drama, truthful and stable minded; they enjoy hearing scriptures.

Another site reads:
This constellation signifies eternal quest of knowledge. The Shravana people are restless. They constantly involve themselves in conversations, or listening sessions to collect information. A person born under this sign is either an ardent student, or a well-versed teacher. They can be excellent counselors, owing to their art of listening and giving advise based on their vast knowledge.

See, it's official. I'm really supposed to be doing this stuff.

Sirensongs, nakshatra is important indeed but there are so many other things to see, as you would be knowing, like Rasi, Lagna etc...

Thanks Vinod: I would love to learn more about Vedic Jyotish, but you have to start somewhere. I understand I have just recently moved into Saturn Dasha (Shani)! Whoa~!!

If anyone can suggest a good Intro-level book to Jyotish (nothing advanced) I'd appreciate it.

Sirensongs, Shani dasa lasts 17 years and will give results depending on how Saturn is places in your chart. In Nepal you will find plenty of good astrologers who will tell you things in detail.

In English, you will find books of BV Raman very useful and easy to follow.

Thanks Vinod; in my chart (which is the same for house positions in either western or vedic) Shani is in the 4th house. Yikes! home, family, childhood, emotions. ....and it's conjunct my Moon.

You already know more about Vedic astrology than I thought. Shani in the 4th house, as you know, is not great except for tula, makar and kumbha lagnas, if I recall correctly.

Conjunct with moon, it makes a very powerful combination in your case...the next 17 years are going to be better that the last 16! How's that for some half-baked knowledge?

Very interesting! I've been wanting to learn more about Jyotish. Would you be able to point me to some resources about it? Thanks in advance!

@Fibrewoman: We can try the books suggested by Vinod (BV Raman); some westerners like David Frawley's Astrology of the Seers a lot. (or is it Robert Svoboda? sorry)

If you are in Nepal there are several qualified Jyotishis who can do your kundli, though sadly, the grandaddy of them all, Mangal Raj Joshi (royal joshi for decades) passed away 2 years ago in his 80s. I don't believe his sons are pursuing Jyotish but i will let you know when I find one. I heard of a good one named Rajendra Shreshta but this is a common name here!

Are you in Nepal now? Give me a shout on private email; would be nice to meet
